Olive oil produced in Montellano, a small municipality in the province of Seville, Spain, known for its extensive olive groves and rich tradition in olive oil production.
Montellano is located in the Sierra Sur of Seville, near the Sierra de Cádiz, an ideal area for olive growing thanks to its climatic and soil conditions. The olive oil from this region is renowned for its variety and high quality, especially the extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), which is usually made from olive varieties such as Manzanilla, Lechín, Arbequina and Picual.
Key Characteristics of Montellano Olive Oil:
Varieties:
- Manzanilla: Known for its balanced flavor, with medium bitterness and spiciness, and a sweet and aromatic profile with a vibrant green color. It is often used as a table olive, but is also processed into oil.
- Lechín: A local variety appreciated for its rustic, intense and fruity flavor and its marked character, exclusive of the regions of Seville and Cadiz.
- Arbequina: Produces a soft, delicate and fruity oil, often used in oils designed for children (e.g., Molino El Palancar’s “Peques”) due to its delicate flavor.
- Picual: The most widespread variety in Spain, it offers an intense, slightly bitter and spicy flavor, especially in young oils.
- Coupage: A blend of different olive varieties, resulting in a smooth and balanced oil with minimal bitterness and a slight spiciness.
Elaboration: Mechanically extracted at low temperatures (cold pressed) to preserve its natural qualities. The oil is presented unfiltered to preserve its organoleptic properties to the maximum, presenting a cloudy appearance with small particles of olive in suspension.
Quality and Awards: Montellano oils, particularly those from Cooperativa Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, have received awards such as the Gold Medal at the 2018 New York Olive Oil Competition and the 2018 IOC London Packaging Design Awards for its premium range. The cooperative’s oils have quality and food safety certifications (e.g., ISO:9001, IFS Food).
Featured producers:
Cooperativa Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles: Founded in 1961, this cooperative produces a range of EVOOs, including single-varietal (Manzanilla, Lechín, Arbequina) and blended oils, as well as an organic option. Its “Los Ángeles” EVOO is known for its intense green color, fruity flavor and slight bitterness, ideal for both cooking and raw consumption (e.g., in salads).
It can be found in special Andalubox stores in Seville. Andalubox also exports to all Europe this extra virgin olive oil, the basis of the Mediterranean diet for all Europeans.
