Iron Maiden Darkest Red Wine is an official merchandising collaboration between the legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden and Van Zeller Wine Collection, a historic Portuguese winemaking family with roots dating back to the 17th century.

Launched in 2021, the wine takes its name from the song “The Darkest Hour” from the band’s Senjutsu album, capturing the band’s intense and dramatic energy in liquid form. Selected and approved by the band (including vocalist Bruce Dickinson) and their mascot Eddie, it is marketed as “Eddie’s Blend,” perfect for fans, rock concerts, or pairing with hearty dishes such as roasted meats, poultry, or robust vegetarian dishes.

• Varieties of Grape: Harvesting native grapes of the Douro: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinto Cão and, occasionally, Tinta Barroca.
• Alcohol content: 13,5 % vol.
• Elaboration: Fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature; between 10% and 20% aged in used Port wine barrels for 12 months to add richness and spice. Ready to drink now, but with aging potential.
• Bottle design: Collectible, with the iconic Eddie illustration on the label and a neck label honoring the mascot.

Tasting Notes: This blended red wine, dark, intense and robust, unfolds like a Maiden riff: Aroma: Ripe black fruits (blackberries, black cherries, plums), balsamic hints, vanilla, dark chocolate and a subtle dry tobacco.

Full-bodied, with juicy blackberries, layered spices, and a deep, rich finish. Its balanced freshness and structure make it versatile; it is best enjoyed slightly chilled (14–16 °C) with the volume turned up high. Some tasters describe it as “multidimensional and satisfying,” although some reviews label it “a bit rough” for the price, emphasizing its rock ’n’ roll style over its refined subtlety.
