Garbanzo de Escacena is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) from the region of Campo de Tejada, in Spain, specifically from Escacena del Campo, Huelva. It is a variety of the “Lechoso” (milky white) ecotype of Cicer arietinum, known for its large size, pale yellowish color, deep grooves and a minimum diameter of 8 mm. These chickpeas are classified as “Extra” according to Spanish regulations, which guarantees the highest quality, and are marketed as dried pulses in packages such as 1 kg cotton bags or 5 kg sacks. Grown in unique, clay-rich, “black earth” or “bujeo” soils in Huelva and Seville, they benefit from a microclimate close to the Atlantic and the Doñana National Park, with humid winds from the southwest that favor slow ripening. This results in a buttery texture, a smooth skin and a refined flavor without aftertaste, ideal for dishes such as stews, hummus or salads. The PGI, certified since January 2014 by the Junta de Andalucía, covers 11 municipalities, with Escacena del Campo and Paterna del Campo being the main producers. Annual production is around 1 million kg, although yields may vary depending on rainfall.
