The Machaquito Dry Anise from Rute (1 liter) is one of the most emblematic and traditional anises of Spain, produced by the Hijo de Rafael Reyes distillery in Rute (Córdoba), Andalusia. This brand has a history dating back to 1860-1876, founded by Rafael Reyes Rodríguez, and today remains in the hands of the fifth family generation. Its name pays tribute to the famous bullfighter “Machaquito” (son/grandson of the founder), which helped popularize it at the end of the 19th century.

Key features:

• Type: Dry anise (or extra dry / double-distilled), colorless, crystalline and bright.
• Alcohol content: Generally 55% vol. (although some references mention 45% in specific versions; the classic dry version is usually the 55%).
• Production: 100% natural and artisanal product. It is obtained through slow double distillation (bidistillation) in copper stills, using olive or holm oak wood as fuel. Ingredients: alcohol (from molasses), aniseed seeds (high quality, primarily from Spain), demineralized and softened water from the Sierra de Rute mountains, sugar, and “something special” according to the secret family recipe.
• Aroma and flavor: Intense aroma of aniseed, with fresh, herbal, and slightly spicy notes. On the palate, it is dry, powerful, and warm, with hints of black licorice in the aftertaste and a very characteristic aniseed finish. It is not sweet like its “sweet” version from the same brand.

How it is usually consumed

• Neat, in a short glass or shot glass, at room temperature or chilled.
• Like “palomita”: in a tall glass with very cold water, ice, and a little sugar to taste (mix 1 part anise with 3–4 parts water).
• A few drops in coffee, infusions, ice cream, or pastries to add an exquisite touch.
• Traditional properties: stimulates appetite (appetizer), aids digestion (after heavy meals), and is a diuretic. Always use in small quantities and in moderation.
