Samaruco is an aged red wine of the PGI Vino de la Tierra de Cádiz, produced by Bodegas Luis Pérez in Jerez de la Frontera. It is produced mainly with Syrah and Petit Verdot grapes, although in previous vintages (such as 2010) varieties such as Merlot and Tempranillo were included. It comes from the Hacienda Vistahermosa estate in Pago del Corchuelo, at high altitude, with albariza soils (calcareous clays with gypsiferous marl) and a microclimate influenced by maritime winds.
Main characteristics:
Varieties: Mostly Syrah (50-85%) and Petit Verdot (15-50%), depending on the vintage. Some older vintages included Merlot, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Winemaking: Harvested by hand at night in 14-15 kg crates to preserve freshness. Each variety is vinified separately with pre-fermentative maceration at 5°C, fermentation in stainless steel tanks (15-28°C) for 20 days, and malolactic fermentation ending in French oak barrels. Aged for 12 to 16 months in medium toast French oak barrels, without filtering or fining. It rests for a year in bottle before being released to the market.
Tasting notes:
Color: Garnet or cherry red, medium-high intensity.
Nose: Intense, with aromas of ripe red and black fruit (cherries, berries), notes of undergrowth, spices (pepper, licorice), coffee, cocoa and mineral touches.
Palate: Powerful, silky, with sweet tannins, good acidity and a persistent finish with toasted nuances.
Food Pairing: Ideal with grilled meats, stews, cured cheeses and chocolate desserts.
Alcoholic graduation: 15% vol.
Price: Between €17.95 and €20.90 (depending on vintage and distributor, e.g. 2020, 2021, 2022).
Production: Limited, with yields of 3,500-5,000 kg/ha, following organic viticulture practices with minimal intervention.
Profile: Samaruco is a signature wine, balanced between power and freshness, with great varietal expression and a character that reflects the Cadiz terroir. It is considered a benchmark of the new reds from Cádiz, standing out for its intensity and subtlety. It is recommended to serve at 16°C and let it oxygenate to fully enjoy its aromas.
