FAUSTINO I GRAN RESERVA RIOJA 75 CL.
Faustino I Gran Reserva Rioja is one of the most iconic and recognized Gran Reserva wines of the D.O. La Rioja in Spain. Produced by Bodegas Faustino (part of the Martínez Zabala Family group), this red wine represents the classic Rioja style: elegant, with great aging potential, balanced and very popular worldwide — it represents an important part of global Gran Reserva Rioja sales.
- Format: 75 cl (standard 750 ml bottle).
- Grape varieties: Mainly Tempranillo (generally 80–90%, for example 86% in the 2016 vintage), with additions of Graciano (9%) and Mazuelo (5%) for structure, color, and complexity.
- Aging: As a Gran Reserva, it spends a minimum of 24 months in barrel (usually more, such as 26–28 months in American and French oak barrels), followed by a prolonged rest in bottle (at least 3 years before being released to the market), which gives it maturity and refinement.
- Alcohol: around 13,5-14%.
- Color: Blond evolving to garnet or tile, with more brick-like edges in older vintages.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Clean and bright, ruby color evolving to intense garnet, high intensity.
- Nose: Very complex and elegant, with a broad expression of ripe fruit (plums, black cherries, stewed red fruits), well-integrated spicy notes (vanilla, cinnamon, clove), touches of cocoa, blond tobacco, cedar, leather, and balsamic hints in more evolved vintages.
- Palate: Elegant and structured, with fine and pleasant tannins, good acidity, medium-high body, flavors of ripe fruit, sweet spices, dark chocolate, and a long, velvety, and balanced finish. It is a classic wine, faithful to the Rioja tradition, with a notable influence of well-integrated oak.
- Style: Traditional Rioja — aged in oak, silky and gastronomic, not ultra-modern or excessively fruity.
FAUSTINO I GRAN RESERVA RIOJA 75 CL is produced only in excellent vintages selected by the winery. The 2016 vintage, for example, has received very high scores (95 points in recent tastings) and awards such as Grand Gold in international competitions. Here are some images of the characteristic bottle, famous for its dark/frosted glass, golden mesh, and label with a portrait inspired by classical art (Rembrandt style): Reputation and Reviews: It consistently scores above 90 points (James Suckling, Wine Enthusiast, etc.).
Older vintages (such as 2004 or 2011) stand out for their elegant evolution, with notes of leather, tobacco, and resolved tannins.
It is a reliable wine, with great value for money in the Gran Reserva category, and very accessible.
